Matczynski New Apple Hill Director
Concert violist, teacher, and respected arts administrator Leonard Matczynski of Boston has been named Executive Director of Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music in Nelson, New Hampshire effective October 1.
“We are thrilled with the opportunity to engage such a respected and accomplished arts administrator to lead Apple Hill,” noted Board of Trustees President Alfrieda (Dita) Englund.
“Lenny brings a long association with Apple Hill as a beloved summer faculty member and, more recently, as a Board member,” she added. “And his accomplishments as Executive Director of Emmanuel Music in Boston for 15 years promise that his tenure at Apple Hill will be filled with musical growth and excitement!”
For his part, Matczynski said recently that, since 1982, he “has seen Apple Hill develop and grow, I have seen students, faculty and artists come and go, and I have heard some of the most amazing concerts…For the entire time I have loved Apple Hill and everyone involved.”
Matczynski studied viola and chamber music with the leading musicians of the time and, as a teacher, has been deeply involved in the training and mentoring of young artists. As Executive Director/Artistic Administrator of Emmanuel Music, he made and implemented the decisions that shaped its very successful performance and administrative structure, its concert and touring programs, its long range plans, and the development of new programs. Matczynski has also produced over 200 Bach cantatas, founded Emmanuel’s chamber music and other concert series, and produced highly acclaimed CDs on the KOCH, Nonesuch and Emmanuel labels.
Commenting on his recent co-chairing of the Apple Hill Program Committee, Matczynski noted the “I have “enjoyed this work, especially working with Mike Kelley, Elise Kuder and Rupert Thompson—the current Apple Hill Chamber Players—and have the utmost respect for their expertise, their skills, the way they handle themselves and their willingness to work hard for Apple Hill. These are the very values and goals that I aspire to as well.”
Central to Apple Hill is “Playing for Peace,” a program which offers chamber concerts and instructional workshops in troubled areas of the world and provides opportunities for musicians from conflicting groups to make music together. It also invites chamber players from areas such as the Middle East, Northern Ireland, and Cyprus to play music together during its summer-long Summer Chamber Music Workshop in Nelson, NH campus.
Apple Hill is a New Hampshire not-for-profit corporation that depends on financial support from individuals, foundations, government grants, and corporations. For more information about Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music, see www.applehill.org.
